Drawing in Space, Part One (075)

Drawing in Space, Part One (075) records a user’s phone location to draw a three-dimensional path in space.

The drawn line is linked to the camera’s position, rather than finger-position on the screen, therefore, the body is the drawing instrument. But objects, buildings, and people in the surrounding context also shape the drawing. To wind the path around a planter, one has to walk around the planter. To make a loop-de-loop, one has to stretch their arm up to the sky and then scrunch down to the ground.

Technicals

A continuous trail is made by drawing cylinders between spheres. Every time a new frame is read from the camera, a sphere is created and positioned 50 cm in front of the device. The previous position of the camera is saved so that a cylinder can then be drawn between the two points. The height of the cylinder is the distance between the previous and current positions.
